Welcome in my mind
A photo of the illustrator Laura Velthuis (Laura Velthuis Illustrator), who is surrounded by her own creations/characters

I used to always tell my parents that I didn’t want to grow up. I was surrounded by stories. During the day my parents read books to me and when I couldn’t sleep at night, they would tell me stories they made up. I was also surrounded by pencils and paper. I grew up with a pencil in my hand. No wonder I always wanted to live at home. Don’t worry, that didn’t happen. Even I grow up, even though I still enjoy being at home. If I think about it, then not that much has changed. I’m still the little girl who just wants to draw and is always amazed by the world around her.

There is a good chance that if you meet me, I will be engrossed in a drawing or a story. I am always looking for new ways to create. New materials, techniques, subjects. There is still so much to discover. My greatest source of inspiration is everyday life. The people, the animals and the things. The stories I read and hear. Music, movies, quotes. Everything tells a story and invites to be depicted.

I work both digital and analogue. I can make everything I create cute, whether I want it or not. I enjoy researching or learning new things. My work must be correct down to the least detail, and I go the great lengths to achieve this. To the point where they probably won’t be seen by anyone anymore. But be warned they are still there. I prefer to work with pencil. Even though I am always looking for new possibilities. I love color(s), symbolism, myths, fairy tales, animation and photography.
This is me.

I’m the little girl who never wanted to do anything but draw. My head is always full of ideas that can’t wait to come out. I am an illustrator, a designer and storyteller. And above all, a dreamer. Just know, not all dreams are deception….
